PDFs, Firefox, Microsoft Word, and other Gotchas

Last Updated: Jan 22, 2013 03:25PM CST
While Print Selection handles the majority of apps and files just fine there are a few cases that it can run foul.  Below, we will explain some of these along with work-arounds.
PDF:

PDF is a proprietary file format developed by Adobe.  In general, a pdf is meant to be viewed only and in no way edited.  As such, it can be problematic copying layouts and graphics from a pdf to Print Selection or an app such as Text Edit.

The best solution is to either open the pdf in Preview and print just the page you want, or try to find the content in a different format such as rich text (.rtf), HTML, or rich text with attachments (.rtfd).

Firefox:
Firefox does not display the Services menu when you right click (ctrl + click).  Instead you will need to access the Services menu through the Firefox menu in the main menubar.

Safari:
The Print Selection service is unavailable for image only selections.  You must select some text along with an image for the service to be available.  Alternatively, copy and paste the image into the Print Selection window.

Microsoft Word:
MS Word 2008 as well as possibly other versions does not utilize OS X services including Print Selection.  You will have to copy and paste content directly into Print Selection's window.

Pages does not display the Services menu when you right click (ctrl + click).  Instead you will need to access the Services menu through the Pages menu in the main menubar.
